Music
Music curriculum intent
The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all children:
- Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music
- Are taught to sing, create and compose music
- Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated
At Hanbury’s Farm Primary School and Oakhill Primary School Federation, children gain an understanding of music through listening, singing, playing and evaluating across a range of styles, traditions, and musical genres. Staff members develop children’s interest in the subject, as well as an understanding and importance of all types of music. We are committed to ensuring children understand the importance of music in the wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves. We employ staff from the ENTRUST music service to provide Year 3 and Year 4 with lessons that enable them to learn specific instruments.
The music curriculum ensures children have the opportunity to sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate music. This is embedded within the classroom using the scheme ‘Kapow’. As well as singing opportunities in class, children have the opportunity to take part in various concerts, performances across the year and learning to play un-tuned instruments. In music lessons, pupils will use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes. We encourage listening to a wide range of music with concentration and understanding. Music is also used in other lessons and activities to create mood, atmosphere and to aid thinking and concentration.
Music is taught within the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. Music will help develop and aid the skills for children within: Communication and Language, Physical Development and Expressive Arts and Design. Reception will follow the KAPOW scheme to provide them with opportunities to learn and play a range of different songs and instruments.
Currently, we also have a number of Year 6 pupils who are also learning the violin with Mrs Chen from Entrust.
